How long have you worked at Origin CPA Group?
I have worked at Origin CPA Group for 7 years!
What is the best career lesson you have learned so far?
To trust myself and my knowledge! It’s definitely a skill that you grow into, but I think a very important one to learn.
What inspired you to go into a tax career?
I have always been a numbers person and very detail-oriented, which is a big part of a tax career. I studied finance and accounting in college, and wasn’t sure which direction to go, but once I tried tax accounting it definitely seemed to be the best fit for me!
What do you enjoy doing during off-season?
I love being outside with my husband and 2 year old! We like to go hiking and for bike rides. We also love to travel to a beach when we get a chance! My son loves the water and it’s fun getting to show him new places.
How do you cope with the stress of busy season and tax deadlines?
I think it really helps that it’s our team effort. During busy season we all come together as a team and help each other in any way that we can. It feels great to be working towards a goal with the whole team and to have people to lean on if you need help!
In your opinion, what sets OCG apart from other accounting firms?
Since we’re a smaller firm, it’s a very close and tight-knit community. We really rely on each other and we use a team approach on everything. This allows our clients to have multiple points of contact with our team so that we can serve them best and get their questions/issues answered quickly.
What is a fun fact about you many people may not know?
I was a gymnast in college at the University of Denver!
What is the one thing you can’t live without?
Dogs! I have two golden retrievers and they make life so fun and happy! They also clean up all the food scraps off the floor from our son after every meal, which isn’t so bad either.
What advice would you provide to someone interested in tax or accounting?
I’d tell them that it’s a very detail-oriented job, but that’s not the only aspect. There are so many parts/pieces of a tax return and one of the most difficult parts is being able to make sure every detail is correct, but to also be able to step back and look at the big picture. It can be hard to take a step back and see if a tax return makes sense overall, and if there are any other opportunities for savings/advice etc. It’s definitely something I’m still working to perfect!
What is your favorite aspect about the tax and accounting industry?
I like that it is never boring and you’re always learning something new. This can also be frustrating at times, but each return is different and you’re constantly running into scenarios you haven’t seen before, which makes for constant learning!
